Dominoes is a classic tile-based game that involves matching tiles with the same number of dots (called pips). It can be played by two or more players and comes in various formats, such as "Block," "Draw," and "Mexican Train."
Components
Domino Tiles: Each tile (or "bone") is a rectangular piece divided into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of pips (from 0 to 6 in a standard set, though sets with higher numbers exist).
Double Tiles: These have the same number of pips on both ends (e.g., double-six, double-four).
Basic Rules (Block Game)
1. Setup:
Shuffle the tiles face down on a flat surface.
Each player draws a set number of tiles (e.g., 7 in a two-player game).
The rest of the tiles form a draw pile (if applicable).
2. Starting the Game:
The player with the highest double tile (e.g., double-six) starts by placing it in the center. If no one has a double, the player with the highest tile begins.
3. Gameplay:
Players take turns adding a tile to one of the open ends of the domino chain, matching the number of pips.
For example, if one end has a 6, the next tile must also have a 6.
If a player cannot make a move, they either pass their turn (Block) or draw a tile (Draw).
4. Scoring:
The game ends when a player runs out of tiles or no one can make a move.
In most versions, the winner is the player with the lowest total pip count on their remaining tiles. In scoring variants, players earn points for the pip total of their opponents' remaining tiles.
Variations
Draw Dominoes: Players can draw from the pile if they cannot play a tile.
Mexican Train: Players build their own train of tiles while trying to play off a communal "Mexican train."
All Fives: Points are scored if the ends of the domino chain add up to a multiple of five.
