I am essentially a scholar of English Literature, and I have a serious interest in the role of English in our society, and I would like those who have had a sound education in Sri Lanka to live here and contribute to our society.
However, you are probably reading this reading this because you want to satisfy requirements set by somebody abroad. I recognise that you want to prove that you have an acceptable level of the language to operate efficiently in an English environment.
This particular requirement is a fair one, but you can't satisfy it without knowing English; and even if you know the language well, you will still need to know how the IELTS test is conducted.
One initial lesson, even two years before starting systematic work, is likely to pay rich dividends. School leavers will receive clear and realistic guidelines for life-long self-learning.
For those with good English, I will provide both materials and guidance to achieve Band Eight, or even higher, with a minimum of fuss. My lessons for the scholarly are likely to suit sophisticated computer users; teaching is likely to alternate between contact and on-line sessions. An eighteen year old achieved 8.5 overall having registered through me, and having only three lessons!
If you are not confident of your English, I will guide you with regular lessons. The test, and the material I provide, are such that most of the Listening and Reading can be done by yourself. I will guide you, certainly, but it's you who have to do the work, so you don't end up paying for unnecessary lessons.
Listening - once we get going, you will realise that Listening is the easiest skill for a Sri Lankan to master. The requirement is that you understand varieties of International English speech.
Reading - many are surprised to find that this is the most difficult module to excel in. The usual problem is slow reading. Individuals read differently, and you need a sympathetic teacher who is willing to study your unique requirements. I will equip you to learn on your own, so that long after the test is over, you and your family will be continuing to benefit from the little time that you have spent with me. This is true whether you are doing the Academic or the General Training Version of the test.
Writing, this is where you need a teacher who really knows how to look at your work and suggest improvements in keeping with your personality, ideas and outlook. I will show you where to go for models; there is much on the Internet. However, the real requirement is careful consideration and marking by a competent and friendly teacher. Most marking will be done quietly by me, and discussed with you later.
The Speaking Test is a short one; I have a thorough knowledge of phonology and I know the subtle features that lead to individuals having accents. It was as an adult that I obtained a Trinity College, London, Speech Teacher's Diploma in what was considered record time. This was possible because I had inherited a flawless accent myself, and I knew all the theory behind it. Not from me will you hear nonsense about being "better than an Englishman"! Nor is there any need to speak with a foreign accent to obtain the highest bands.
I will guide you towards fluency, while helping you to overcome any awkwardness in your style of speaking.
My own first language has always been English, but I have none of the superiority complexes that too often pervert those favoured by circumstances. We are Sri Lankans, and IELTS tests are designed to ensure that those who obtain a certain band have mastered a skill up to a certain level. Language is for communication with other human beings!
My expertise is in Literature. My Bachelor of Arts (English Special) Degree is from Peradeniya University, where standards are exceptionally high. I was awarded the Leigh Smith Prize for being the top student in my batch. However, I will impose no "Literature" on you! My Post-graduate Diploma in Education and my thirty years of teaching, which straddle everything from the village school to the English Department of the University of Peradeniya, mean that I have a comprehensive accumulation of skills - to help you.
I have recently been concentrating on IELTS, since so many seek help, and I have undergone a Special Training conducted by the British Council in delivering results in this exacting exam. I am also a Registration Centre for British Council IELTS, with the focus being on Bandrawela.
Most IELTS candidates are busy people, so I suit each lesson to your individual requirements. Charges have to be high, the rate quoted is for each lesson. However, if we are in for a long haul, because you are still far from where you ought to be for the band you desire, a reasonable package can be negotiated, but please don't come to me expecting either a miracle-worker, or a charitable institution!
Let's get down to honest hard work; that is the surest and most economical way to achieve results!
